ÀṢẸ: Embodying the Divine is an echo of the vitality of Yorùbá knowledge systems, practices, beliefs, and philosophies as a means for VILLAGER’s knowingness and belonging in the world - a humble reverence to their ancestral heritage, cultural expressions, beliefs, and practices. Using the energetic likeness (àwòrán) of family members, loved ones, and acquaintances, VILLAGER ritually engages their subjects in a spiritual rebirth of consciousness, transporting the subjects, the viewer, and themselves to a dynamic and holistic space where energy is experienced with an intrinsic sensitivity to color and texture.&nbsp;Following in the Yorùbá tradition of wood-working, the artist uses acrylic to graft the subjects with vibrational scars of energy potential characterized by weaving-like angular patterns akin to Yorùbá weaved fabrics and Ilé-Ifẹ̀ bronze heads to reimagine and subvert traditional portraiture. The divine potential of the subjects is materially transformed and manifested through the process of scarification, mark-making, and pattern-making to enlighten their character and essential nature (ìwà). Manifested as a portal of gaze and an object of corporality, the cowrie-studded eye (òjú ìnù) is meticulously placed on the physical head (òrì òdè) in place of a physical eye to inform the inner spiritual consciousness and potency (òrì ìnù) of the subjects. SELECT A COWRIE is a 1-day pop-up survey exhibition of VILLAGER’s recent works showcasing the evolution of cowrie iconography in their practice as an object of cultural and contextual significance.Throughout this exhibition, VILLAGER explores the multifaceted role of cowries as a vessel/object in Yoruba culture and the larger African Diaspora, emphasizing their significance in adornment through jewelry making, currency systems, trade networks, rituals, ceremonies, and ancestral veneration practices. SELECT A COWRIE serves as a visual narrative, reflecting on the historical, spiritual, and social dimensions associated with how historical African art, cultural practices, and knowledge systems continue to inform and shape contemporary expressions and experiences.The exhibition will also accompany a limited series (50) of original acrylic works on 9” x 12” mixed media paper displayed in a salon style. Each print has been numbered and signed for purchase. Exhibition attendees will have an opportunity to purchase prints and the sale price of each print will be determined randomly from $35 - $120 using ChatGPT 3.5. The exhibition presents interdisciplinary expression by artist Frey Su through a multimedia installation which blends traditional paintings, sculptures, lighting, and sound. By accommodating six pieces of art, the exhibition will extend the boundaries of the room, transforming it into an immersive meditation. These works collectively represent five micro-sensations and their relationship to spiritual elevation and awareness, naming essence (Jing), energy (Qi), and spirit (Shen) of an individual at a macro level. The pieces are arranged in an orbit-like layout, floating amidst an ever-changing, boundless light that envelops a universal, borderless core extending from the central space to the sky.Guided by the flow, visitors will become a part of the artwork, able to lie on the ground or freely explore, experiencing and sensing a nearly omnipotent, natural synergy of body and spirit from a perspective beyond themselves.
