Project Brief:
This project brief outlines "A Retrospective on Black Girlhood: The Dilution of Teenagehood," an editorial collaboration that examines girlhood and tweendom as influential television tropes, particularly from the late 90s to the mid-2000s. By juxtaposing the stylings of popular tween shows with the fashion choices of real-life Black tweens, we will explore how costuming serves as an exaggeration of identity.
Focusing on the ethos of the Disney styling method and the representation of young girls in UPN sitcoms like One on One and Moesha, we will analyze the stylistic codes at play. Central themes will include sisterhood, naivete, and coming of age, alongside discussions on the cultural symbols and influences that shape Black girlhood today. This project will actively engage teens in the creative process, encouraging their voices and perspectives to celebrate and deepen the understanding of their experiences in media and culture.
