A decaying building can be seen as something moving from human order to natural order. The scientific term this boils down to is entropy. The 2nd law of thermodynamics induces a low hum of existential terror we learn to live with and slowly, once we learn to see though it, we learn to open our eyes to the opportunity for reorder within the natural, chaotic order that surrounds us. This potential draws hope from the shadow, and this balance of chaos and hope paints in us, beauty.
