About the artist

Evie Dreams has been painting and drawing since her earliest memories at age three. Spending lots of time among the forests, creeks, mountains and lakes during her childhood in New Hampshire, USA, she developed a steadfast appreciation for the natural world, which is reflected in the natural imagery, sustainable methods and activist tones of her current work.

Her lifelong condition of being an outsider has motivated curiosity and a search for truth about the world and its people, which she explores through reading, having conversations, and ritualizing reflection. Her visual art compounds this input, exposing the personal symptoms of being an outsider, as well as her discontent with the culture, impact and legacy of her home country.

Her vision for her work is to inspire its viewers to be introspective, curious, empathetic, and authentic, because her quest has revealed to her that these are some of the missing ingredients at the heart of many of our world’s issues. She believes her unique perspective as someone who doesn’t strongly identify with many groups can help lift the veil of intolerance that group mentalities throw over the “other”.

This series juggles a paradox: we are all the same, and yet, we are individuals. I portray my personal experiences in abstract, symbolic terms to encourage viewers to consider the similarities we share beneath the guises of culture, class and ideology. Knowing that we are similar, we can then appreciate individuality with a higher degree of empathy.

Hairless, nude identical figures capturing my likeness represent people as I see them: reflections of me, through my lenses of bias, playing with the nondual concept that all are one. Surreal, abstract, naturalist imagery with intentional symbols assert that what is depicted is not from the 3D world and invite viewers to form their own connections. My intuitive process of painting what feels right helps me channel something deeper than anything I can consciously decide to make, helping me understand myself.

One of my goals is to challenge my inclination to make closed art. The more open my style becomes, the more authentically it will carry my message. As my tubes of solvent free oil paint run out, I replace them with their closest value matches: titanium white for hansa deep yellow for yellow ochre. In my latest piece, I take this further by collaging with dried painting palettes. Working with limitations pushes me to discover new ways of expression.
