So skully took over people's desks as a wooden toy, and it's been.. SO fulfilling. And now the stress is around the question, "What next?" and i took 6 months or so away from it to think.Part of what made the wooden toy project so fun and unique was how much I LEARNED throughout it. To do ANOTHER toy would feel.. not right. So I want to try something entirely new, something people might not expect.Stained glass.I think it'd be a great medium to learn, hands on, with TONS to figure out (and document) along the way and bring people in on.And most importantly, it goes to Skully's mission of helping people see things differently. He would be a window hanging charm that would help reflect the light into your house or room and change it, to make it warm, colorful, creative.Skully would change your perspective, again. Just as he did with his head flipping action as the toy.I've got an idea, even a digital mockup, and I've watched hours of tutorials on how to make stained glass.I am intimidated, and I do need equipment. And more importantly, I need to afford the TIME to take away from work to make this.Equipment would be glass cutting tools, soldering iron, etc.Sourcing local glass from old shops around MaineCamera gear - big time I really want to DOCUMENT the heck out of this with video and would need hard drives, microphones, lights, etc to photograph and video document this project to share and inspire others.I also would like to put some time into another promo animationAnd of course, beautiful bespoke packaging for these little charms. I'd like to step my packaging up from last time, always delivering detailed and thoughtful little gifts to people's homes.I'd LOVE the chance to dedicate time to this, spend some money up front on equipment, document it properly, promote it organically, and inspire others to make projects like this all while making perfect little light-benders to hang in your window to remind you to think differently.

Step 2: Proposal - Stained Glass Skully

Last year I dedicated 6 months to a really fun wooden toy project that had a lot of success.Mostly, it was FUN, which was such a breath of fresh air. I had no idea what I was doing, I never really used any tools in my life, nor paint brushes so I was really lost. But that was the point!I shared this process really painstakingly to my followers and people got super invested in watching me figure it out. It was a stackable wooden toy (completely hand made) built by me with packaging, a matching shirt, stickers, and even a stop motion film to promote it! I made 20 of them and they sold out really quickly.I would LOVE to do more things with this character, Skülly. The characters spirit is to help people think differently. He has a weakness and insecurity around being a skeleton, he feels its a lame trait. But little does he realize, if he flips his head upside down, he can see things from a literal different perspective. His goal is to help people (creatives) think differently, look at things uniquely, and generally just breath.Right now, I want to do a stained glass version of him so he can literally change the way your room looks through his perspective. But for now, here's a bunch of images and videos about not only the final result of the wooden toy, but a lot of the process that went into creating and sharing how it was made.ProcessI started in 2d, sketching this character as simply as possible, working in photoshop and illustrator.Once I figured out the idea, I mocked things up in Blender, paying attention to the way things would balance and stack. Then, I got into the tools, carving out wood, sanding it, learning to paint, stenciling the face, embedding magnets in the hat, etc.Once I had all of this done and the custom screen printed and embroidered packaging, I realized I needed to promote these.I'd talk to friends saying, "I'm making a toy!" and they'd reply, "oh nice, who is going to print them, or are they 3d printed?" At which point I realized, Oh.. I need to show people that I'm MAKING these things. And thats when I realized the power of sharing the process and behind the scenes. So i made a series of 10 youtube videos showing people the process from design to fabrication, packaging and promo materials.I even made a stop motion film to promote the project!!All that to say it has been the MOST fulfilling project to date for me, and I'd LOVE the time to make more things like this, which Ill get into in the next.

Step 1: Previous Work Stackable Wooden Skully Toys

Hello! My name is Kirk Wallace, I'm a fulltime independent illustrator, animator, and art director working out of my home studio in Maine in an old 1800's farm house.I've recently moved here and built out a studio from scratch by myself renting tools.I left my job to pursue freelancing in 2015 and haven't looked back yet. I work mostly commercially which has been a blast with clients like Adobe, Wacom, Google, etc. It does, however, rarely leave me with much time to pursue personal projects.I do love commercial work, but I want to inspire people and myself with more personal work with this character, Skully. There's more about him in the "Your Past Work" section. But there's a whole world to explore with this character and his core mission to let people know that Your Weakness is Your Superpower.I'm self taught. I was a computer science/engineering major that realized after graduating that illustration was something I actually felt something for. And from there I got spun up into the internet sharing work online authentically and growing a following all around the mission of sharing my process and letting people know "if i can do it, anyone can".With any future personal work, my plan is to always document like crazy and inspire people to keep making things and more importantly sharing them so the world can see.I'd love the chance to carve out some dedicated time to my new project which I'll get into in the subpages.
