Guido Avelino Photography — Hidden in Plain Sight
Guido Avelino's Hidden in Plain Sight is a photo series about the El Paso/Chihuahua desert, a once Mexican and Native landscape now patrolled and surveilled, where presence is mistaken for absence. It was entered in Playbook's 2025 Photo Competition, “Hidden in Plain Sight.”
Artist statement
Hidden in Plain Sight explores the paradox of visibility in the El Paso/Chihuahua desert—where presence is mistaken for absence, and history is buried beneath silence. In a landscape once Mexican, once Native, now patrolled and surveilled, survival means vanishing in the open. The sand doesn’t reveal more than it remembers. This project confronts what is seen, ignored, and deliberately forgotten in plain view.
