Artist statement

The series ‘Shadows first’ examines the influence of our perspective – and its consequences. By deliberately altering the viewer’s angle by 180 degrees, each photograph plays with the focus of our attention. Shot with the spring sun in its highest position, hard contrast-rich shadows occur, showing the same length as their objects, creating a fluid representation of pedestrians and cyclists against the hard lines of tramways and zebra crossings across the road. This series was shot at the Vijzelstraat in Amsterdam, mid-March 2014.
