Akeen Kidder Imagination Fund Application — The Yarn Art Guy

Artist statement

Akeen Kidder, known as the Yarn Art Guy, is a visual artist transforming traditional yarn into striking works of art. Using only yarn and glue, he crafts intricate portraits and vibrant designs that challenge the boundaries of conventional mediums. His most celebrated collection, the "Black Icon Series," showcases powerful, yarn portraits of Black celebrities, blending culture, influence, creativity, and innovation. Inspired to use yarn because of the brushstrokes of Van Gogh’s "Starry Night," Akeen turned his passion for yarn into a business, inspiring others to explore their artistic potential. With a unique fusion of texture, color, and storytelling, Akeen’s yarn art has captivated audiences across art shows and social media by challenging the expected use of his medium.
