Leading with Heart: A Long Island Leader on Overcoming Crisis and Inspiring Change

Project Inspiration.jpeg

Project Proposal DescriptionThe idea of my project is to alter the perception of Wyandanch, a predominantly African American and Latino community in Suffolk County, New York, which is seldom portrayed positively in the media. The project involves a public art installation featuring a short film projected onto multiple buildings in the community over a weekend. With the support of this grant, I plan to reconnect with the community members I photographed in 2020, who contributed to the development of Wyandanch during the COVID-19 crisis, to interview and learn how their lives have changed four years later and the lessons they've learned. To accompany the interviews, an artistic dance performance will be filmed to pay homage to Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. The dancers' costumes will be made from face masks, which I designed in 2020. After editing the film, I will exhibit it by projecting it onto various businesses throughout the village for a weekend. While I have experience designing and creating public art installations, this will be my first time exhibiting a film on such a large scale for the public. As a result, I will have the opportunity to rethink my approach to storytelling, how it's consumed, and how viewers interact with my work. This will ultimately be an exciting experience for me as a visual artist. If this project is funded, I am confident it will contribute to improving Wyandanch’s reputation and inspire individuals from neighboring communities to visit for the art and experience the beauty of the village. Moreover, the film will empower and strengthen the relationships within the community by allowing members to visually witness their own greatness and achievements. The Imagination Fund will provide the resources needed to rent the equipment for capturing the interviews and the dance performance. It will also allow me to compensate the dancers and rent the necessary equipment to project the short film onto the walls of businesses in the community.

A Visual Celebration of Long Island's 2020's Community Leaders | Public Art Installation

Project TimelineGiven the 30-day grant timeline, the first two weeks will be dedicated to capturing footage for the short film. At the same time, I will collaborate with town officials and business owners to select and arrange the best locations for the screenings. The last two weeks will focus on editing the footage and promoting the installation to Wyandanch and neighboring communities for the weekend showcase.

In my previous work, photography remains the foundation of each project, which later expands to allow viewers to participate and enables communities to immerse themselves in my projects. Below, you can explore my photography, which initiates the public art installations and interviews that advance the message. My objective is also to transform public spaces, encouraging communities to engage with art.
