puri [풀이] zine is a zine series created by Roger Kim with the mission of dismantling of colonialism, labor exploitation, racism, and genocide through the lens Korean history modern, ancient, domestic, and diasporic. The zine is the product of the meeting of meticulously referenced research and interviews with members of the Korean diaspora as a way to connect personal and familial trauma with the traumatic events of world history. The zine is published both as a physical printed booklet and online in pdf form. The pdf versions are available to download for free. For the Imagination Fund, puri [풀이] zine proposes to create an interactive web-based version of the historical timelines and associated articles from the first and second and any future issues of the zine. This combined timeline promises to be a way of looking at history that highlights the complicated and weblike connections and juxtapositions of events with a streamlined interface not possible with the physical and static digital media that of puri zine's current

Project plan & timeline

Application Round 1

Both issues of puri [풀이] zine feature a historical timeline. One of traumatic events during modern Korean history from around 1850 until the early 2000's and one of Imperial Japan's actions and atrocities from 1850 until 1952 in Korea, China, Taiwan, and the rest of Eurasia. The two timelines document and contextualize important events relating to colonial and neo-colonial actions in Asia. This Imagine Fund project is the creation of a webpage that combines the two timelines in a way that is easily legible and navigable, but also highlights the complicated and weblike connections between historical events. Dates on the timeline will link to relevant articles from the zine, which will also link to other related, parallel, or otherwise relevant articles and dates. Using the web will allow the timeline to be easily navigable in a way that is not possible in current media of puri [풀이] zine, print and static pdfs.

puri [풀이] zine is a dismantling of colonialism, labor exploitation, racism, and genocide through the lens Korean history modern, ancient, domestic, and diasporic.
puri [풀이] zine is meant to be a highly accessible and easy to read entry point into the important and pertinent topic of Asian history, which I believe is understudied, especially in the West. The style of the zine is meant to be inviting, to look more like an art book than a book of essays, with relatively short written pieces interspersed with illustrations. While Puri [풀이] Zine is not academic work, it is carefully researched, with citations, and easy to find references to scholarly or otherwise reputable sources. I believe this to be important especially now with the overload of information, and false information available in the major channels where people go to learn (social media, google search, and wikipedia). You can find out more and read puri zine for free here: https://purizine.gumroad.com/ and here: https://www.instagram.com/purizine
