Noise 'Recycling' Device for the Glasgow Subway
Task
For this cross-disciplinary project across engineering student of different branches, our group was tasked to create a project with the theme ‘Future Transport’.
Solution
The Glasgow Subway has long been plagued by noise pollution that is a concern for its passengers, with levels reaching as high as 97.8 decibels, earning it the title of 'Britain's most deafening commute.’ In the research process, we came across a power generation technology which utilizes the collision of sound waves with piezoelectric material. With this technology, we designed a system which ‘recycles’ the noise to generate electricity, which is then used to power a speaker that produces an anti-noise to achieve noise cancellation.
