Barbeque Design as a Design for Manufacture PracticeTaskThis project required carefully designing 3 barbeques with Design for Manufacture principles in mind, a general assembly drawing and CAD render is compulsory for each. Then, one of the designs was further developed with manufacturing drawings for each component.SolutionAfter considering potential materials and manufacturing processes that are applicable for a barbeque, I designed a fold-flat barbeque, a balcony barbeque, and a decorative garden barbeque, with the 3rd design being brought forward. An Adaptive Cutlery HolderTaskThe project consisted of two parts: first design an inclusive product predominantly made of plastic for the kitchen or bathroom, addressing issues of accessibility (group work), then further develop the product by applying sustainable design strategies (individual work).SolutionOur team decided to address the needs of Arthritis patients by improving the design of existing pain-relieving cutlery. Our design is a stand-alone grip, making it universal and adaptable to ordinary cutlery so that users can comfortably use any utensils of their choice. To improve the sustainability aspect of the product, I focused on dematerialisation and reusability, reducing 83% in mass and allowing easy recycling. The final prototype is made by first 3D printing the form to create a mould, then casting silicone into the mould.November - December 2022, March 2023

A User-Centred Redesign of a Door StopTaskIn this project, pairs redesigned each other's chosen unsatisfactory product based on user-oriented changes determined through observations, interviews, and focus groups, with a focus on addressing disliked features and improving overall usability and desirability.SolutionSince my user found the usage of her door stop troublesome on a carpeted floor, but she moves to a different apartment every year, I decided to design a door stop which is userfriendly on a variety of flooring. The appearance is inspired by the user’s favourite food – carrots. The final product is made with 3D printed PLA, laser-cut then hot-wire bent acrylic, and various standard components.February - March 2023

A Cinema Companion for the Blind and Partially-SightedFinal Year ProjectFor visually impaired film enthusiasts, the only current solution to enjoy cinema&nbsp;is audio description.&nbsp;This solution comes with its problems: heavy load on hearing, interference with movie soundtracks, limitations in information, etc.Introducing&nbsp;TOUCH.NEMA, designed to enhance the cinema experience for visually impaired moviegoers. This innovative device transforms&nbsp;captivating elements in films&nbsp;into a tactile experience, making visual content accessible to everyone.TOUCH.NEMA creates dynamic sculptures generated from movie scenes using a matrix of moving pins, allowing users to explore the compositions and movements curated by filmmakers for movie scenes. Designed with the needs of visually impaired users&nbsp;in mind, TOUCH.NEMA features an LED to facilitate seat location. A rubber grip and strap&nbsp;are also implemented&nbsp;as tactile cues for the upright direction and safety.Works seamlessly with audio description headsets, users can now enjoy a comprehensive, multi-sensory experience in every movie moment in real-time.&nbsp;Promoting&nbsp;inclusivity and accessibility in&nbsp;entertainment,&nbsp;while enhancing engagement and appreciation of film craftsmanship.September 2023 - May 2024

Noise 'Recycling' Device for the Glasgow SubwayTaskFor this cross-disciplinary project across engineering student of different branches, our group was tasked to create a project with the theme ‘Future Transport’.SolutionThe Glasgow Subway has long been plagued by noise pollution that is a concern for its passengers, with levels reaching as high as 97.8 decibels, earning it the title of 'Britain's most deafening commute.’ In the research process, we came across a power generation technology which utilizes the collision of sound waves with piezoelectric material. With this technology, we designed a system which ‘recycles’ the noise to generate electricity, which is then used to power a speaker that produces an anti-noise to achieve noise cancellation.February - April 2022

A Cookware Cleaner Inspired by Le CreusetTaskThis project involved three stages: disassembling an electromechanical product to understand its mechanism and manufacturing process, understanding the brand identity of an allocated brand, and finally adapting the mechanism to the context of the brand. My original product is an electric lint remover and I was allocated Le Creuset as the brand.SolutionThe main function of a lint remover is to refresh the appearance of old fabrics, and I adapted this concept to create a cookware cleaner for the luxury brand Le Creuset. By incorporating the impeller mechanism of the lint remover, this product helps the cookware maintain its fresh appearance while preserving its patina – aligning with the brand’s value of ‘heritage’.October - November 2021, March 2022

Design and Production of a Wind Turbine for Commercial UseTaskIn this team project, we were required to design and construct an efficient wind turbine for the use of a specific market.SolutionOur wind turbine was designed with the downdraught effect in mind to maximise the wind flow through the turbine blades. The turbine blades are made of flexiply panels as this allowed us to easily bend them into shape without requiring specifically shaped parts. To hold these blades in place we used laser cut pieces of MDF, consisting of a solid backing piece and a piece with slots for the blades to fit into. Combining these parts together gives a central component consisting of three curved blades enclosed at either side. This part is screwed onto a metal axle that sits between two larger MDF supports fitted with ball bearings. It is a horizontal axis wind turbine with the addition of a second support which allows the blades to be significantly larger to catch more airflow.

A Collection of Street Lamps Made by Repurposing Building Materials of St. Andrew's ChurchTaskFor this collaborative project between Product Design Engineering and Architecture students, students were tasked to analyse the materials used in a building of their choice on Renfrew Street, Glasgow, then explore ways the materials could be repurposed for product design.SolutionThe focus of our group was the St. Andrew’s Church due to its religious and cultural significance. We utilized technology like LiDAR to assist analysis of the building. In the process we gained valuable insights on the sources and repurposing/recycling methods of the materials of this historical building. As a final step, I designed a street lamp that incorporates the sandstones and stained glass from the church, honouring its historical values and resonating with the idea of a church as a sanctuary, while also providing a functional object for public use.Janurary - February 2023

An Interactive Science ExhibitTaskThe brief was to design an interactive science exhibit under the context of the pandemic, implying any interactions with the exhibit’s mechanism should be indirect (using an Arduino microcontroller). Due to the remote education arrangement, the project was compromised by using a controller simulated on TinkerCAD.SolutionI decided to design a stroboscopic zoetrope, which fascinated me as a child. To better demonstrate the principles of animation and stroboscopic imaging, as well as adding some elements of interactions, I included two knobs which allow the ‘visitors’ to adjust the flickering rate and speed of the disk respectively. An LED changes from red to green when the visitor successfully sync the two rates to create an animation, adding a sense of reward.March - April 2021
