My project is based on the idea of using design as a bridge between indigenous story telling and personal identity. In this project I would love to take a deep dive on the relationship between, Iara the the mother of the waters, Yemanja and the legend of the Vitoria Regia. Three different water goddess that emerge through Afro Brazilian and indigenous story telling in BrazilIve included a project timeline along with some inspiration images that are guiding this project.I believe this work is important because legends are fundamental to human existence. Before there was written word there was spoken word, and that is how stories, legends, secrets, warnings and blessings were passed down for generations. My goal is to create a garment and have the final product be a zine with images of the garment and information of the legend of Iara, Yemanja and the Vitoria Regia to inspire the local community of Philadelphia where Im currently based.xx-Vivi

My past work

Aloha! Im Vitoria Byrne, from Kahuku Hawaii and I am an Artist/ Designer. Im currently working at Urban Outfitters as a sweaters designer. and in my free time I continue to paint and sew.I completed my senior thesis for college a little over a year ago and It has really served as a starting point for the work I want to continue. Since working as a corporate designer I haven't prioritized creating in the same way I did in school. This fund would allow me to purchase the materials to create a garment that can combine the knowlege Ive gained from working in the industry, reflections on my collection and where I want to take my art practice, inspirations from recent travel ect. I love the work that I do on a daily basis designing sweaters that are sold across the country but I can't deny the part of me that yearns to make work that is so out of the ordinary, so intricate, so delicate and bold that you can't look away.
