Harnessing the infinite scroll as a medium, Folk-Scrolls are animated stories and essays that offer content to the reader / participant in a way that feels intuitive and captivating, yet simple and expansive.The heart of Folk-Scrolls is about bringing a folktale / fairytale ethos back to the realm of digital storytelling, especially in reviving ancestral folktales of BIPOC communities. The creative direction of Folk-Scrolls centers magical realism, bringing stories to life through vibrant color, texture, digital collage, and illustration.Every Folk-Scroll will have a combination of text, illustration, and animation. Beyond this, each Folk-Scroll is unique and variegated, sometimes embedded with soundscapes or interactive widgets. In my first prototype supported by the Playbook Imagination Fund, I'm embedding at least one soundscape and one interactive widget, to user test for interaction and engagement.Inspired equally by animation history, from Charles-Emile Renaud's 1892 original to the Wan brothers' Princess Iron Fan in 1941, and modern digital experience design, particularly the early days of Tumblr's infinite scroll, on which the present iterations of Instagram and Facebook are based, Folk-Scrolls bridge different forms of new media to create a simple and timeless style of storytelling.The intended impacts of Folk-Scrolls are the following:<ul><li>Prototype a new form of digital storytelling!</li><li>Revitalize interest in ancestral BIPOC stories!</li><li>Bring ancient worlds to digital platforms! </li><li>Long-term, the goal is to build a living archive of Folk-Scrolls that include folktales and fairytales (and collaborators) from across the world! </li></ul>I've been illustrating, animating, and storytelling for over a decade now, and am excited to take my creative practice to a holistic new level in this way with support from the Inspiration Fund! This board outlines the actionable plan and timeline of my project over the course of the 30 days #imagineWithPlaybook cohort.

Step 2: Plan & Timeline

Folk-Scrolls: A New Form of Storytelling 〰️ To bring this form of storytelling to life, I'm using Playbook to project manage and mockup samples, as well as bring in collaborators and teammates as needed. For example, some Folk-Scrolls may call for a soundscape: I will share my Playbook link with sound artists to give them a bird's eye view of the project. Folk-Scrolls will be multimedia from video to audio to text-based and visual, depending on the story represented.This is the next step in the evolution of my own creative practice, as I've been creating animations and illustrations, researching stories, and writing for a long time. With Playbook as the central organizing hub, I'll be able to bring all of these mediums together into one simple and seamless experience. Folk-Scrolls harness Community Voices 〰️ Folk-Scrolls invite collaborators to offer a folktale or mythological story from their ancestry. Then, I create 2-4 animated illustrations (gifs) bringing the story to life.In this way, Folk-Scrolls activate both community collaboration and have multi-cultural impact that emphasizes diversity. By telling tales across different communities and in partnership with collaborators, Folk-Scrolls reach broad audiences. Simultaneously, they also build a diverse living archive of folktales!The BIG VISION goal is to build a living archive of Folk-Scrolls that include folktales and fairytales (and collaborators) from across the world!My 30-Day Plan 〰️ Upon receiving the Imagination Fund, I will deliver the following within 30 days:<ul><li>1 Gorgeous Folk-Scroll. This Scroll will feature 1 interactive component, 1 sound component, and 2-4 new animated illustrations. I will use Playbook-awarded funds towards production as needed. I have already identified 4 stories I'll choose from, to bring to life!</li><li>1 Folk-Scroll Project Board. Playbook will watch Boards being used for project management and story-mapping in real time! Upon completion and publication of the first Folk-Scroll, Playbook Boards will be available as "behind the scenes" process documentation.</li><li>A new form of storytelling. The first Folk-Scroll will serves as a prototype for a broader series. This way, the impact of the first Playbook-funded Folk-Scroll will reach far beyond the initial pilot. The long-term vision is to build a living archive of Folk-Scrolls that include folktales and fairytales (and collaborators) from across the world.</li></ul>

Prototyping Folk-Scrolls 〰️ Here are sample animations that I've made in the past. These reflect how Folk-Scrolls will feel.Paired with stories written in prose or in verse, they create an ancient-future atmosphere. Building on these samples, Folk-Scrolls will take this creative direction to the next level through other forms of embedded media like soundscapes and interactive widgets.
