About

Agriel Ness is a Latvian-born, London-based fine art photographic artist whose work explores the politics of the body, both its physical and metaphysical dimensions, and how these lived experiences are shaped by ancestral and mythological narratives, with a particular focus on the feminine. Through a symbolic, surreal, and emotionally charged lens, she blends self-portraiture with intimate collaboration to create photographic spaces for reflection, transformation, and healing.

After profound personal and collective shifts, her practice evolved, becoming darker and more politically attuned, yet remains guided by a quiet undercurrent of mystery, both conceptually and in process, drawn to visually translate what is felt but difficult to define beyond language.

SYMPATHEIA

Sympatheia explores the sacred entanglement between personal experience and collective memory, where femininity, resistance, and rebirth weave together through the potent symbolism rooted in the surreal. Drawing on trauma, both personal and collective, Agriel reclaims the ancient Stoic term Sympatheia- the interconnectedness of all things - through a distinctly feminine lens.

Initially inspired by a mythological detail from the legend of St. Agnes, who according to lore, grew hair over her body to shield herself from rape, Sympatheia reclaims this act as a symbol of defiance, protection, and feminine power. Here, it becomes a living force, expressed through body and landscape, thread and hair- an ancestral current that moves through bloodlines, memory, and myth. It is the space where personal story meets collective history, where pain becomes power.

Sympatheia is not simply compassion- it is resonance. It is the weaving of self and other, of myth and body, of past and present, the land and its history. It names the sacred entanglement that holds us to the past, remakes us, and guides us toward a new feminine order- one where we are free to heal inherited pain, to embrace struggle as transformation, and to walk the path of ultimate rebirth.

There are women who speak in whispers across time - not in words, but in the echo of bone, in the weight of hair, in the rhythm of blood that still remembers. Their names have been altered, burned, glorified, erased. And yet they live, humming beneath the skin of every woman who has ever stood at the threshold of her own becoming.
