The photographic project “Cammino di Santiago: A Journey for Personal Discovery” explores the social dimension of contemporary pilgrimage, investigating how the modern pilgrim faces this ancient journey in the age of technology and globalization, in which, at this specific historical moment, technology inevitably becomes present in the life of every single human being. The current world is overwhelmed by an infinite number of images that has placed the human being in the role of a limited spectator. In the essay An Anthropology of Images by Hans Belting1, it is highlighted how human beings are replacing real-life experiences with images of places to visit. This phenomenon leads to a progressive decrease in human experiences, which become less tangible, fleeting, and light. The Camino de Santiago takes on the form of a double register, of disconnection from the real world, becoming a place-non-place suspended between the ancient world and the modern one, where the coexistence between modern technology and the archaic sense of the human being live together perfectly

This photographic project was born out of a desire to explore my daily life, usingphotography as a way to search for deeper meaning. I draw inspirationfrom vernacular photography, which John Szarkowski describes as a simple andspontaneous practice. Geoffrey Batchen expands this approach to includeprofessional photographers. This approach allows me to capture my reality withauthenticity, free from rigid rules. The central theme of the project is solitude, which I represent through the bedroom. For me, this space is more than just a place to sleep; it’s a personal refuge where I canstop, listen, and reflect. Here, time feels suspended: the walls hold my thoughts, andthe ceiling becomes a keeper of dreams. The bed, with its warm blankets, reflects acomforting light during the day, but at night, the darkness takes over, bringing backancient fears. However, solitude is seen with darkness but I don’t see darkness as an absence. Tome, it’s a transition—a necessary pause before reaching the light. It’s the void thatprepares creation, the night that comes before the day. Through my photographs, Iaim to capture this transition, using light and shadow to create intimate, personalimages that explore the boundary between dream and reality. In this process, I see myself as an explorer, searching for balance between what isvisible and what remains hidden. I want those who view my work to feel part of thisreflection, finding their own meaning in darkness and moments of stillness. I don’tseek to provide answers, but to create a connection with that part of ourselves thatemerges in our most intimate and vulnerable moments. My goal is to show that darkness is not something to fear, but a valuable space fortransformation and growth.
