The Pillar of a Society (El pilar de una sociedad) is a 35mm film photo series by Lu Lopez about Mexican women who work in the streets every day, sustaining families and economies. It was entered in Playbook's 2025 Photo Competition, “Hidden in Plain Sight.”
Artist statement
Mexican women: pillars of our society. They work in the streets every day, sustaining families and economies without expecting the respect or recognition they deserve. This work is my hommage to their strength, resilience, and constant presence that many choose not to see. They are right in front of us, yet we still refuse to look.
