Urszula Kaniuch Photography — The Herring Spawn

The Herring Spawn is a photo series by Urszula Kaniuch about the few spring days when herring spawn turns coastal waters milky, covers beaches in tiny eggs and draws birds, sea lions and fishermen. It was entered in Playbook's 2025 Photo Competition, “Hidden in Plain Sight.”

Artist statement

Every spring, the coastline transforms in a way that's almost easy to miss. For a few fleeting days, the waters turn milky, the beaches are covered in tiny eggs, and the whole ecosystem wakes up—birds, sea lions, fishermen, all drawn by this ancient rhythm. It’s a life cycle that happens just out of sight for most of us, but if you know where to look, you catch these little moments—textures on the shore, a flash of movement, the quiet hum of nature at work. My images are a glimpse into that in-between space, where something wild and timeless is happening just below the surface.
