This site is acting as a catalogue of Brian's work. If you own any of his work, no matter age, medium or condition; I'd love to add them to the archive and keep a record of them. Different catagories are listed at the top of this page. Other than NFS (not for sale), paintings may be sold - though I don't have the dimensions or current condition on hand, as they're in storage. Thanks for looking, and feel free to share. - Emile (Son) Please get in touch by emailing me at eholmewood@gmail.com

Brian Holmewood

Brian Holmewood 1944-2021Fine Artist, Westport New ZealandBorn Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, 1944. In New Zealand he enrolled at Canterbury University School of Art where Doris Lusk, Bill Sutton and Rudi Gopaz were his teachers – amongst others. He last lived on the edge of Westport's wharf, allowing him to observe the boats on a daily basis. Many of his abstract works are inspired by the abundant driftwood that washes onto the West Coast beaches. He had a desire to paint a literal picture of driftwood, but the forms, shapes and colours lent themselves to dynamic abstractions. He admired artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Anslem Kiefer, Braque, Picasso and Egon Schiele.THE NEWS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2002 - PAGE 5Blurring the linesby Juliet McVeighWestport artist and art teacher Brian Holmewood says the line between his two careers is blurred. He is a full-time art teacher and a part-time artist and both jobs not only influence each other but also bring him immense satisfaction.Holmewood is preparing for his first solo exhibition in about 14 years. None of the works exhibited have been shown publicly before.Growing up in England, Holmewood then moved to Australia and finally New Zealand after popping over here for a working holiday. He has been in Westport for the past 17 years. "I find the South Island very stimulating," he said. His paintings are a mish-mash of genres and styles. The one style he closest resembles is Neo-Expressionism. This was a movement in painting that emerged in the late 1970s,characterised by its intense feeling and aggressively raw handling of materials.Neo-Expressionist paintings are typically large and rapidly executed, as is evident in much of Holmewood's work. His art depictions dabble between abstract and realistic and both styles are heavily influenced by the environment in which he lives. His paintings would probably be different if he didn't live on the West Coast, he said.Holmewood's use of texture and modelling results in surprising illusions of volume and depth. His abstract work starts from a conventional form likedriftwood (a recent series began with this) but the image becomes blurred in a welter of surface activity. His realistic work conveys scenes familiar around Buller and many paintings depict Buller Port and Tauranga Bay."My work is both realistic and abstract but if you get to know about painting, one's seeing with your mind and the other is seeing with your eye." Much of his work is displayed in and around West Coast galleries and restaurants. Most of the work he has sold has gone off-shore with buyers undoubtedly appreciating the distinct New Zealand feel of his painting.Although the pressures and time-constraints of teaching are hard, Holmewood ensures he paints regularly. He does his preparatory drawings in front of the television and paints in his studio which adjoins his house. Most of his works are oil on canvas.Holmewood said he gets a lot out of teaching at Buller High School. "The one thing about teaching is I'm still doing something I'm really enthusiastic about." His teachings inspire his personal art and vice versa. He is influenced and inspired by other artists that, like him, dabble between realism and abstraction. These include 1920s American artist Wayne Thiebaud and New Zealand artist Bill Sutton. His work has received increasing recognition through the years and one day Holmewood would like commit his days to the paintbrush."I've always had the urge to try and make it as a painter."His work will tell you he already has.Brian Holmewood exhibition. Left Bank Art Gallery, Greymouth- October 8-14.
