I have thought about this project for nearly two years and I believe that now more than ever is the perfect time to do it. I have dabbled in taking photos that tell more of a story, but this would be my opportunity to push myself outside of my comfort zone of landscape, nature, and fine art photography. Just capturing more people in general would help me become a well-rounded photographer.Although I will grow in more ways than one, this project is more about raising awareness of what's going on outside of our bubbles. I see so many people go to work, go to the grocery store, and come home. Maybe they hang out with friends on Saturday and go to church on Sunday and repeat. There's little room and time to take in the world outside of the thirty minute commute. There's little time to see what's actually happening within our city limits, not to mention outside of them. I want to show them what's going. I want to show them how differently people are living within our state. Whether they're spending the weekend on the golf course or trying to figure out how they're going to get dinner on the table because they're in a food dessert. I want anyone who sees these images to take time to take in the world around them, question how they're living, and see where they can help or do better.

my creative journey

Chris Aluka Berry's 'Affrilachia: The Remnant that Remains' documented African Americans living in southern Appalachia and how it offers a different perspective to the usually "white-washed narrative of the region" and showcases the multi-cultural aspects.

I spend hours watching photographers on Youtube and Instagram, who inspire me in general to just get out and shoot, but these photos are the inspiration for this particular project.

Tuca Viera's photo he took in 2004 showcased the wealth disparity and Johnny Miller went back sixteen years later and it's still essentially the same.

I will capture the many "sides" of South Carolina with a focus capturing the disparities. The first two weeks will be spent in capturing the capital and the surrounding cities (Blythewood, Hopkins, Forest Acres, Elgin, Lugoff, Camden, Lexington). The following one and half to two weeks will be spent around the state at and around the major cities with a focus on the areas with the highest and lowest poverty ratings and some with some of the lowest and highest populations in the state.According to data from The U.S. Census Bureau, the main counties of focus with the highest poverty rates are Allendale, Marion, and Dillion. The counties with the lowest are York, Berkley, and Beaufort. However, there are a few on the list and whatever is feasible in terms of route and time, I may visit more or less, aiming to visit at least four of the six counties. The goal is to capture five to ten photos that perfectly encapsulate my project from each county and ten to twenty from each county/area that will help portray the many sides of South Carolina. In total, I aim to capture at least 100 photos that can be published online and twenty to twenty-five of the best ones to be printed into a photobook/zine and distributed to community hubs and a few local businesses throughout the capital. There will also be a behind the scenes vlog about the entire process from start to finish that will be posted at the end of the project.

My Project Proposal

I have been passionate about storytelling through different mediums for many years, but photography and writing are my favorites. I took journalism and photography classes in high school and college, and I've used the skills I learned to tell stories through blogs, novels, and photographs.
