I love stories—reading them, writing them, watching them. I see boundless potential in fiction, where truths can be conveyed through constructions from our wildest imaginations.I have also long been a photographer, and have always been awestruck by the impact visuals can have. And so, I sought to merge these passions in a way that can hopefully empower other storytellers like myself—and that was through film.

As a South Asian woman in film, I feel a responsibility to make sure the stories and faces of women of color are part of the conversation. We need film and TV to do more than tokenize our various experiences—to give us a full spectrum of existence. To show us that we are beautiful and worthy and interesting, and that we don’t have to sacrifice parts of ourselves to feel so. Many of my stories center around themes of womanhood, our frustrations, our way of loving, our transformations over the course of a life. It’s not easy being a woman in this world, and yet we get up and do it every day, again and again. There is beauty in that resilience, and tragedy within the circumstances that make that resilience necessary.

With my latest project, I've written and developed a dramatic short titled, "The Lesson." I plan to produce and direct it this fall.

Much of my published work is within the documentary and nonfiction realm, notably with the Emmy-nominated "Brief but Spectacular" on PBS. Storytelling is at the heart of everything that I do, and with the pieces I directed and produced for BBS, I was able to hone in and share real-life stories.I was lucky enough to be able to meet folks from all walks of life across the country, and have conversations with them to understand their life stories. From there, it was a collaboration between them and myself to figure out the best way to share their stories with the world in video format.
