So, what makes me feel good? Like, really good?Unveiling the common thread of a community.Typically a craft or traditional process, this common thread is the heartbeat of the community, the life-force that sustains its people. Now I have a prime opportunity to capture the Appalachian region's hearty relationship to the land.At this time, we are embarking on the lengthy mission of rebuilding after Hurricane Helene. My shoulders have relaxed in relief at the manner in which farmers, nurses, chefs, and even children have stepped up to provide each other mutual aid. Everything that we could need arranged itself in droves just days after the destruction. On the other hand, tensions are indubitably high. Entire swaths of our land and culture have disappeared. It is difficult not to feel victimized; to feel disconnected from the Earth; to view its natural cycles as predatory. As global climate pressures mount, let's take Appalachia as a case study in the immense healing that we gain from our land.I aim to use animation in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, and possibly a transition in Blender.PROJECT: AIN'T NO HEALING IN THE COMMASThemes: sustainability, the Earth as a sentient being, intimacy, self awareness, femininity, healing, climate change°Concept: a 30 to 90 second video utilizing animation and rustic scenery to emphasize the individual's healing through intimate relationship to the Earth (Gaia).°Format: minimum one maximum four mini scenes with overlaying animation.1. Scene: An Appalachian farmer tills the land and moves hay.1. Animation: Bright colorful tendrils of green, orange and pink rise from the ground as the land is cultivated.2. Scene: A woman standing on the Earth says, "Gaia, today is so heavy, will you help me?" She takes a deep breath and her stress releases into the ground.2. Animation: Black clouds surround the woman's face. Orange light rises from beneath the Earth and merges with her feet, pulling the black through her body, allowing it to fade out.3. Scene: A woman's hand reaches for processed packaged foods in the grocery store.3. Animation: The foods emit a black cloud.4. Scene: A woman lays down to sleep in her home (possible to portray in Blender using Scaniverse 3D render asset of a room)4. Animation: As she sleeps, a warm glow from the Earth below the home rises up to surround her.Execution:I have already experimented with achieving glowing effects statically in Photoshop, included below. I seek to make this glowing effect dynamic using animation. My ultimate technical goal as a designer is to learn how to augment video using Python OpenCV.Final Considerations: I would love to include Quilt Barns, which are symbolic of our region. I modeled my cover photo after this tradition. Thank you for your time.

Step 3: Submit!

In 2023 I published the 40 page zine Angels Up, a study on graffiti in the US printed in color and available online. An uncommon perspective on mundane streets, Angels Up illustrates understated collective optimism.By 2024 I published the 6-minute ski film Park Laps and got my peers talking about "flow state."Skiers of snow laden Steamboat Springs discover a phenomenon of the meditative sport in short film Park Laps.Throughout these projects, I worked diligently with my artistic mentor, an elderly woman in my community in Asheville, North Carolina. She showed me how I could use Selective Color to make an object to stand out - how I could crop an image to increase the contrast between two characters - and how to sequence my video shots to support the plotline. My bolstered commitment to digital art was a natural follow through. Two years ago in 2021 I had received a grant from the Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill to document artists on campus. This was during the pandemic, and people were lonely. My digital media campaign, called Freestyle, helped them discover community and expressive creative outlets. I was awarded the Chancellor's award before I graduated.
