Gray is a 35mm film photo series by Marie Lourier that follows two schoolgirls in post-Soviet settings, walking through backyards, drawing hopscotch grids and pausing between games. It was entered in Playbook's 2025 Photo Competition, “Hidden in Plain Sight.”
Artist statement
This series, shot on 35mm film, follows two schoolgirls in post-Soviet settings, capturing quiet moments of their everyday life — walking through backyards, drawing hopscotch grids, pausing between games. At first glance, these are simple, familiar scenes. But within them are traces of something deeper: the way youth holds strength and softness, how play becomes a quiet rebellion against grey surroundings, how small gestures carry emotion.
